Photos, description Landskoy, French breed of geese, characteristic.

Geese of the Landsky breed were created specifically for the extraction of high-quality and massive liver. Experiments on crossing were carried out in France. The basis was taken by Toulouse geese. For the first time in the post-Soviet space were in the mid 70s of the last century.
Land geese are moderate. At 2 months of age, they weigh about 5 kg for conditions of high-quality feeding. Despite the fact that the weight of a goose on average 8 kg, the weight of the liver can reach 800 g. During a cycle, a goose can produce 25 eggs. Little goslings have poor preservation - only half of the goslings will live to the 2nd month.

A mature Landsky gander can easily serve a whole flock of geese. Specialists use this quality to improve other breeds of a lighter type. There is a special way, thanks to which in the first generation more than 80 individuals can be obtained from crossed breeds, which will have the quality of parents improved by 2 times. If a gander weighs 7 kg and a goose weighs 5-6 kg, then their heirs will weigh about 10 kg.

Despite the small size of the Land geese, their body build is strong and muscular. The head is round, slightly flattened on top. The neck is short but thin. The limbs are short, strong. On the belly there is a pair of fat folds that sag to the ground. Feathers have a light gray and dark gray color, the lower part of the abdomen is white. On the wings scaly color. Landsky goose themselves hatch their eggs well, so you can do without an incubator in shallow yards. Gander moderately restrained, but if the herd is in danger, then the goose will immediately discourage it.

In order to improve the productive qualities of Landa geese, they are crossed with Hungarian, as a result of which, a mixed breed reaches 10 kg of live weight. And that's not all the benefits of a mixed breed. In most cases Land geese are grown for the production of high-quality liver, which has good demand and price. In a mixed breed, the weight of the liver can exceed 800 g if the geese are strongly fed with special additives.

In each worthy institution in the menu you can see "Foie Gras" - a delicious goose liver dish. This is a very delicate, delicious and expensive dish, so the liver is highly valued and in demand.

History of

The breed in question was obtained by French breeders on the basis of Toulouse geese, which were crossed with local birds. The initial goal of scientists was to get birds with a large liver. Lands eat well, so the mass of the considered internal organ can reach 400 grams. In Russia, the breed appeared in the 18th century, approximately 30 years after the Toulouse (these birds were brought to our country from Hungary).

Previously, birds were fattened by force in order to obtain maximum liver weight gain. Now birds consume food in large quantities on their own. The weight of individual copies can reach up to 12 kilograms. Despite the efforts of breeders to cross Landts with white geese, nothing good came of it, because the white color absolutely does not like these birds. The idea of breeding new breeds was eventually brought to life. For effective mating it is necessary to keep different geese in one herd, you need to start from a young age.

Land goose with gray or brown plumage are considered the most common, although in some individuals feathers may have a whitish tinge. Representatives of the breed in question are indicated by a large massive body. The back, the head of the bird, and the wings are covered with gray plumage; there are white feathers on the belly. The beak is yellow or gray with a black tint. The average weight of geese is 8 kilograms, maximum 12, females weigh slightly less - up to 7 kilograms.

Landa breed geese can be seen from afar by a proud posture, except that they have a long neck. The birds in question are quite active, moving quickly along the paddock in search of food. Feet of small, yellow birds, perfectly distribute bird weight. The eyeballs are small, round, black. The breed in question is distinguished from the rest by the presence of several fat folds in the abdomen.

Productivity

First of all, you should pay attention to the weight of the liver, the weight of this internal organ reaches 10% of the body weight of an adult goose. This is a fairly high figure, because the weight of the carcass reaches 8 kilograms. The egg production of females reaches 40 pieces per year with an average mass of one specimen of 150 grams. Geese have average maternal instincts, but with the right approach to their upbringing they will be able to fully fulfill their duty, incubate their offspring and protect it from natural enemies.

Farmers engaged in breeding Landa geese grow this bird not only to produce high-quality home-made meat, they are interested in expensive liver and fluff. Goslings quickly gain weight, at 3 months of age their weight reaches 5 kilograms. Such growth rates are rarely found among other breeds.

Particular attention should be paid to downy feathers, because this natural product does not cause allergic reactions on human skin. Plucked geese up to three times a year, getting with each head up to 400 grams of warm fluff.

Note!Works on crossing Landts with other breeds, for example, Hungarian or Italian geese, are underway in our time. At the farmstead of some farmers you can meet large, up to 10 kilograms of birds with a large kilogram of liver.

Features of feeding and maintenance

The diet of the birds in question depends on the goals of the farmer, which he pursues when growing. To obtain a massive, high-quality liver, it is necessary to limit the mobility of the bird, to give a lot of food strictly at a certain time. Feeding geese to the liver occurs in several stages:

  1. From the beginning of life up to 3 months of age, birds provide a full-fledged diet, they graze on pasture, periodically disinfect the room, give a lot of vitamins.
  2. The main purpose of the second stage of feeding is the prevention of stressful situations and the occurrence of diseases. Geese contain in the room at the rate of two heads per square meter of usable area. Half of the diet gets on the steamed corn grain, another 30% for protein foods. This period lasts one or two weeks. At the end of the fattening each bird should eat at least 300 grams of feed per day
  3. Forced feeding means limited movement of geese around the barn. At this moment, the density of planting is increased to 6 heads per square meter, geese are kept on deep bedding or in high-rise cages. Fed the birds with a special tube, watered from the drinker. In the second week of fattening, the consumption of food is brought up to 700 grams per specimen, next week - to a kilogram.

In the case of keeping geese for meat or fluff, outdoor cultivation in sheds on dry bedding made from straw or sawdust is used. The diet is made in such a way that the birds do not overeat, because during the fattening period the bird becomes oily, which reduces its reproductive qualities. Breeding livestock updated young growth annually, but not more than 30%. Experts do not recommend dramatically changing the diet of geese, it can cause stress and all sorts of diseases.

Feeding for big liver

In order to increase the hypertrophied liver of birds in geese, an open-air cage is settled less than 1 square meter and provide hourly meals.

Feeding birds on the liver can be divided into 3 stages.

  1. From birth to age 11 weeks Goslings are kept warm and clean in a suitable aviary. Juveniles are fed good nutrition, they are daily released outside.
  2. At the end of the first stage, geese are prepared for keeping in other conditions, which provide for a decrease in the area of the enclosure and an increase in the volume of feed. During this stage, the birds are resettled in a close enclosure: 0.5 square meters per 1 bird Feed the herd with steamed corn grain (50%), protein feed (30%), corn turtle (20%).
  3. 3 times reduce the amount of free space per individual: on 6 geese 1 m. To provide such conditions, the space is divided into cells, the bottom of which is covered with straw. In the absence of free space, geese colonize 60 cm metal cages stacked on top of each other.

Daily feed volume adjusted up to 300-400 g. A week later, the geese are given a double or triple dose of vitamins A, C. Once the goal has been achieved, the stage is considered complete. Geese who do not eat 300 grams of feed are rejected.

In the third stage, the birds are fed with a machine, the tube of which is inserted directly into the esophagus. Water the geese from the drinker.
The amount of feed increases first up to 600-700 g

At the end of the week, the amount of feed per head is raised up to 1 kg. Geese, whose digestive system cannot cope with this amount of food, are sent for slaughter.

Breed features

Landa geese, as a separate breed was created in France on the basis of another species. The reason for the creation was the fact that they have a very fatty liver. Since these geese are French, they love each and every one, so now they are used even in our country for crossing with other breeds of geese, but more light compared to the Land geese. Therefore, their offspring is quite large in number and size, and may even exceed their parents by 10-12 kg. It should be said that females become good chickens and mothers and can even hatch other people's eggs, while taking care of the same as for their own eggs.

But the males of this breed are very brave and are always defenders not only of their herd, but also at home. Their main advantage is the liver, which is considered an exquisite delicacy all over the world, because it is not only healthy and tasty, but also incredibly aromatic. We all know the dishes of foie gras, here it is made from the liver of these birds.

Another valuable quality of their liver can be considered the fact that it has many vitamins and minerals and does not contain cholesterol at all. And even doctors recommend using it to people who suffer from diseases of the cardiovascular system.

Appearance

The most widespread Land geese are with gray and brown feathers, although you can also find white shades. The main characteristic of their appearance can be considered the fact that they have a massive and large body. At the same time, the head, back and wings are painted in gray shades, and the belly is exceptionally white. The beak is mostly yellow, although you can find a gray or black shade. The average weight of males of this breed is about 8 kg, and females can weigh up to 7 kg.

They have a long neck and proud posture, while they move quickly enough and are famous for their mobility. Despite the fact that they have rather short yellow legs, they distribute the weight of the bird evenly. And so she does not experience difficulties when walking fast.

The eyes are small, round in shape, and their color is most often black, brown or rich yellow. It should be noted that besides the size and weight, it will be almost impossible to distinguish between a goose and a gander of a given breed. Even if someone shows you a photo of representatives of the same breed, but of different genders.

Their peculiarity from other breeds of geese can be considered the presence of special fat folds on their bodies.

Origin

As mentioned earlier, the Domestic geese began their journey in France, when these beautiful birds were made by selection based on the Toulouse geese. Initially, they were created only to obtain a large amount of the liver. Since they eat a lot and can give about 400 grams of liver. After that, in the XVIII century, this breed was brought to Russia. If we speak in more detail, the story says that the home city of these birds is the city of Artiger.

They appeared no earlier than 30-40 years after Toulouse. And to us were imported from Hungary. They were selected very carefully and the main indicators were their mobility and abilities in pasture. Previously, they were force-fed them to get the maximum liver weight. Now they do it on their own, and the propensity for such a diet has become one of their acquired instincts.

Although they tried to cross them with other breeds, it was noted that they did not work together with the white geese, because they did not like this color at all. Therefore, this idea was dropped. Although now the breeders have returned to this experiment, but they only advise to do this with individuals that live in the same flock from a young age.

Productive features

It is worth noting that the liver, for the sake of which the Land geese are grown, takes up about 10% of their body, and this is considered to be just an excellent indicator, given that their body weight is about 8 kg. Although we can not say about their high performance in the amount of 40 eggs per year, each of which will weigh about 150 g. Despite the fact that the geese of this breed are medium hens, with their proper upbringing and training, they will do their duty as they should. And you can not worry about the fact that the future offspring will die or be with poor health.

If you get Landa geese, you can get not only meat and eggs, but also fluff and expensive elite liver. These are the reviews of the owners of this bird. As for the chicks, by the 10 weeks of their life they can weigh about 5 kg. Although it is rare among other breeds.

In addition, you can use this bird for the manufacture of filler for pillows or other purposes, because they give a lot of quality fluff, which is also eco-friendly and does not cause allergies, unlike the fluff of other birds. You can pluck a bird at least three times a year because of their thick feathers, and you will get no less than 350-400 g of fluff.

It is worth noting that work with this breed is still underway and now they are trying to cross them with Italian and Hungarian geese. As a result, some farmers can meet hybrid geese, which weigh about 10 kg, and their liver weighs a kilogram.

If you decide what breed of geese to start in your household, then undoubtedly pay attention to Lands, who do not require any special efforts to care for themselves, can eat almost everything you give them. In this case, you get not only a standard set of productive abilities, but also an expensive product in the form of a goose liver, on which you can earn big money.
